Rhinoceros
By Eugene Ionesco
Directed by Fadi Skeiker
The Play
A rhinoceros suddenly appears in a small town, tramping through its peaceful streets. Soon there are two, then three, until the "movement" is universal: a transformation of average citizens into beasts, as they learn to "move with the times." Finally, only one man remains. "I'm the last man left, and I'm staying that way until the end. I'm not capitulating!"
My Work
In an attempt to make Rhinoceros more accessible for our audiences, we decided to modernize the play by adapting each act. I adapted the first act, while collaborating and overseeing the adaptation of the other two acts. The modernizations we made mainly included pop culture references, and the refocusing of the Ionesco’s politics from a WWII era France, to the politics of a modern day United States.
